Keyword groups

Folders, manual groups, rule-based groups and AI grouping: how they work and every rule field and operator.

Groups organise tracked keywords so you can read visibility, clicks and rank per topic, section or intent. They live in the Groups sidebar of the rank tracker.

Group types

TypeMembers
ManualExactly the keywords you put in it.
Rule-basedEvery tracked keyword that matches the rule. Membership is worked out for the date range and device you are looking at.
FolderHolds groups. A folder has no keywords of its own.

Two entries are always there: All keywords, and Ungrouped for keywords in no manual group (shown once the project has groups).

Create a group

  1. Press New group at the bottom of the sidebar.
  2. Enter a name (up to 80 characters, unique among its siblings) and choose Manual, Rule-based or Folder.
  3. For a rule-based group, add conditions and choose whether a keyword must match all or any of them. The form shows how many keywords match.
  4. Press Create group or Create folder.

To fill a manual group, tick keywords in the table and use Move to group, or pick the group when you add keywords.

Rule fields and operators

A rule has up to 10 conditions.

FieldValue it checksOperators
QueryThe keyword textcontains, doesn't contain, starts with, ends with, is exactly, matches regex, doesn't match regex
PageThe keyword's main ranking page in the selected periodThe same seven text operators
RankRank at the end of the selected periodis at most (≤), is below (<), is at least (≥), is above (>), is between
ClicksClicks in the selected periodThe same five number operators
ImpressionsImpressions in the selected periodThe same five number operators
CTR %CTR in the selected period, as a percentageThe same five number operators
  • Text conditions ignore case. Several comma-separated terms in one condition mean any of them; for doesn't contain, none of them.
  • Regular expressions use RE2 syntax, up to 200 characters. Nested repeats such as (a+)+ are rejected.
  • Page is checked against the full URL, its path with the query string, and the bare path. When a keyword ranked with several URLs, its main page is the one with the most clicks, then impressions, then the most recent.
  • A keyword without a ranking page in the period never matches a positive Page condition and always matches a negative one.
  • A keyword with no impressions at the end of the period never matches a Rank condition.
Limit

A rule-based group only contains keywords you already track; it does not start tracking new queries. Because the number fields are read for the selected period, its members can differ between date ranges.

Nesting and roll-up

Nesting is one level deep: manual and rule-based groups can sit inside a folder, and folders stay at the top level. Drag a group onto a folder, or use Move to folder in the group's menu.

A folder's numbers cover the keywords of all groups in it, each keyword counted once even when it is in two of them. Visibility and average position of a folder are computed from those keywords together, not averaged from the groups. See Visibility and rank spread.

A keyword in several groups

  • A keyword is in every rule-based group whose rule it matches, in addition to its manual groups.
  • Move to group moves: the keyword joins the chosen manual group and leaves its other manual groups.
  • A keyword gets into several manual groups through a CSV that lists it under several group names, by adding an already tracked keyword to another group on the Add keywords screen, or by applying AI groups with Keep existing groups.
  • The keywords table and the keyword page name one group per keyword: its first manual group in sidebar order.

Rename, reorder and delete

The menu of a group has Rename, Move up, Move down, Move to folder, pin and Delete…. Pinned groups are listed first. Manage groups opens all groups as a tree for bulk edits. Remove empty groups deletes manual groups without keywords and folders without groups, except those a report, alert rule or note uses.

Deleting a group never deletes keywords. Deleting a folder moves its groups to the top level. A delete can be undone right after it. Reports, alerts and notes filtered by a deleted group lose that filter.

AI grouping

AI grouping suggests a category tree (folders with groups) for your tracked keywords.

  1. Press Suggest with AI in the sidebar.
  2. Under Keywords to group choose Not in a group yet or All tracked keywords (regroups them), then press Get suggestions. The run continues in the background.
  3. When it is ready, press Review groups. Rename categories and sub-categories, and untick the ones you do not want.
  4. Under Your existing groups choose Replace existing groups or Keep existing groups, then apply.
  • Sent to the model (OpenAI): the query text of the keywords, your brand terms, and the names of your existing groups with a few of their queries. Clicks, impressions, CTR and positions are never sent.
  • Nothing changes until you apply. A run covers up to 10,000 keywords.
  • With Replace existing groups, groups and folders left without keywords are removed. Rule-based groups and groups used by reports, alerts or notes stay.
Plan

AI grouping comes with paid plans. On Free, group by URL folder when you import keywords. See pricing.

Page groups

Groups of URLs, as opposed to keywords, are page groups. They are documented under Traffic.
