Alerts
The built-in checks and their thresholds, your own alert rules, where alerts appear, and the alert and weekly emails.
After each daily sync, Serplyze checks every project for changes worth knowing about: a keyword that slipped, a keyword that stopped getting impressions, and a fall in the site's clicks. Alert rules add your own conditions on a keyword or a group.
All checks use final Search Console days only, so provisional data never raises an alert.
Built-in checks
The built-in checks compare the last 7 final days with the 7 days before. They are always on and need no setup.
| Alert | Raised when | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| Rank drop | A keyword's average position got worse by at least 1, with at least 30 impressions the week before and 15 in the last week | Critical: it left the top 10, or loses 25+ expected clicks a week. Warning: it left the top 3, loses 5+ expected clicks a week, or fell 3+ positions from within the top 20 |
| Lost impressions | A keyword at position 20 or better with at least 30 impressions the week before had none in the last 7 days | Critical |
| Traffic drop | The site's clicks fell by 20% or more week over week, from at least 100 clicks | Warning; critical from 40% |
Expected clicks lost are this week's impressions multiplied by the difference in expected CTR between the two positions (see Visibility and rank spread). A move that matches none of the severity conditions, such as 45 to 48, raises nothing.
- Alerts are news, not history. Nothing is raised from a project's first sync, from history loaded later, or for a keyword in the sync that first fetched it.
- The same alert is not raised again within 7 days.
- Sync problems are not alerts: see Google access.
Alert rules
- Open Alerts and press New rule in the Active rules panel.
- Choose the project, then what to watch: A group or A keyword. Ranking URL rules can also watch the Whole project.
- Choose the metric, the period, the condition and its value.
- Press Create rule.
| Metric | Conditions | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Rank | drops by at least (positions); falls out of the top | 1 to 100 |
| Clicks | drops by at least (%) | 1 to 100 |
| Impressions | drops by at least (%) | 1 to 100 |
| Visibility | drops by at least (points); drops by at least (%) | 1 to 100 |
| Ranking URL | ≠ target URL for (days); changes, for (days) | 1 to 14 days in a row |
- Period: 7, 14 or 28 final days against the same number of days before.
- A clicks rule needs at least 10 clicks in the earlier period, an impressions rule at least 50 impressions. A rank rule needs at least 5 impressions in the earlier period.
- A rank rule with drops by at least also fires when the keyword lost all impressions.
- A group rule on rank checks each keyword and raises one alert listing those that matched (up to 10 by name). Group rules on other metrics use the group's totals.
- A rule alerts at most once per period.
Ranking URL rules count final days in a row. ≠ target URL applies to keywords with a target URL and alerts when one ranks with another page. changes applies to keywords without a target and alerts when one ranks with a new URL. Both resolve by themselves when the keyword ranks with the expected page again.
Each rule has a switch to turn it off and a delete link. When its keyword or group is removed, the rule is marked and can only be deleted.
A project can have up to 50 alert rules. Rules only watch for declines; there is no rule for a gain.
Where alerts appear
- The bell in the header: open alerts of the current project, or of all projects on workspace pages. The badge counts alerts you have not seen yet.
- The Alerts page: every alert with Open and Resolved tabs, newest first, with filters on text, type and project, and an export.
- The projects dashboard: an Alerts column per project.
Each alert links to the keyword, the rank tracker or Traffic. Resolve moves it to the Resolved tab and Reopen brings it back. View-only members can read alerts but cannot resolve them or edit rules.
Alert emails and the weekly summary
| When it is sent | |
|---|---|
| Rank drop alerts | After a project's daily sync, listing the alerts raised since the last email. At most one email per project a day. |
| Weekly summary | On Mondays: clicks, impressions, visibility and the biggest movers for each project you can see, for the last 7 final days against the 7 before. |
| Sync problems | When Google access to a property is lost, or a project's daily sync fails twice in a row. |
| First sync finished | Once per new project, when its first import is done. |
An email only contains projects its recipient has access to.
Email settings per member
Each member sets their own emails under Settings → Notifications. Nobody else sees or changes them.
- Email types switches each email on or off for every project of the workspace.
- Per project gives one project its own setting for an email type.
- By default every member gets alert emails and the weekly summary, and owners and admins also get sync problems and first sync finished.
- Client portal members receive none of these emails.
Unsubscribe
Every one of these emails has a one-click unsubscribe link. It turns off that email type for you, like the switch in Settings → Notifications, where you can turn it back on.
